The Ghost of Florence Martus

Florence Martus was a woman who lived on Elba Island, Georgia. She lived on the island with her brother who was the lighthouse keeper of the lone lighthouse on the island. No one else was on this island beside the two of them so it would be quite lonely.
Florence was then engaged to a sailor and when he went off to a trip, Florence promised to him that she would welcome every ship that passed the island with waving arms until his return. However, Florence’s fiancee never did make it back home to Florence. Florence would then go on to live for another 45 years on the island until her death. She kept her promise to her lost fiancee by continuing the tradition of waving to every ship she saw that passed the island. After her death in 1931, her ghost was still seen waving her hands welcoming every ship that passed.
To this day, boats still honk their horn in memory of Florence. In 1971, a statue was erected in her honor on River Street in Georgia.
