Everett Road Covered Bridge
Everett Road Covered Bridge is located in Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio. Joanthan Hale was one of the earliest settlers of this valley, and in 1810 he requested for a road to pass through his farm. This road would never be built because in 1832 the Ohio and Erie Canal were completed. However, the canals did not bring the agricultural and economic activity that the road could possibly contribute. Ira Hawkins requested for this road again in 1840, and this time it would be built. The road connected the towns of Boston and Peninsula through the valley.
On February 1st, 1877 John Gilson and his wife were coming home from visiting some friends during a bad winter storm that caused the waters of Furnace Run to have severe rapids. A large piece of ice blocked their advancement on the road and they were forced to make their way around it through the water. They both fell in the water and Mrs. Garrison was rescued, but John’s body was found four days later dead. This incident is believed to be the reason why the covered bridge was built. People have reported seeing the sight of a ghost in the form of a man with overalls and an old straw hat by the bridge, as well as a lantern at night that disappears when going closer to it.
