E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial has become one of the most beloved films of all time. The story of a young boy who meets an alien has moved viewers for more than two decades. Steven Spielberg has called this film one of his most personal films. He based much of the story on his experiences as a child dealing with the divorce of his parent, his relationship with his siblings, and creating his own imaginary friend.
The film takes place in California. An alien race fond of plant life lands in a forest. They spread out to find different types of plants to take back aboard their craft. When government agents arrive on the scene, they are forced to take off, accidentally leaving one of their own behind. The small alien makes his way to the home of of Elliot, a lonely suburban boy who has been traumatized by the divorce of his parents.
The two form a close bond and become interconnected. When E.T. becomes sick and begins to die, Elliot feels his pain. Government officials take E.T. into their own care and begin doing experiments on him. With the help of a few friends, they manage to take E.T., who has miraculously been cured, back to the place where his ship landed. E.T. leaves earth but not after leaving a rainbow to show his thankfulness.
