Elizabeth Sutherland

March 26th, 2009

Elizabeth Sutherland was a woman who practiced Voodoo in New Orleans. In the year 1855, she was mobbed by her neighbors outside of her house because the people believed that she had a put a spell upon all of them. The police took her away from the mob and brought her to the Third District Station for safety. Another mob then formed outside of the station insisting on giving her up so they can execute her as if she was a witch. In order to avoid a Salem Witch Trial, the police let her go free out of the back of the station. They then went outside and told the crowd that Elizabeth had turned herself into a black cat and ran away. This is yet another example of how in the mid 19th century, Voodoo was something that the people of New Orleans did not take a liking to at all, and saw it is a major threat to their existence.
