In Crook County, Wyoming, stands Devil Tower; an 865 foot natural rock tower formed from the solid lava core of an eroded volcano. It was declared the first United States National Monument in 1906 by Teddy Roosevelt. Native Americans have lived where the site is and consider it to be a scared place. There also have been many urban legends that have been told by the Native Americans themselves.
The most popular legend to stem from Devils Tower is when seven girls who were being chased by a bear took cover by one of the rocks. The gods raised the rock to push the girls into the sky and into safety away from the bear. Legend has it that these girls are now stars in the sky; the Pleiades in the constellation Taurus. The bears furious left claw marks on the rocks which gives the tower its rigidness on the sides. The Tower also became even more popular when director Steven Spielberg used the tower as the landing site for the ufo in his movie, Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind.
