If you have seen Mel Gibson’s Passion of the Christ, have read the bible in your life, or are a Christian, then you are probably already familiar the story of Jesus death. It is a gruesome tale that has been heard by millions. It tells of the ultimate sacrifice one man was willing to make for the betterment of mankind.

Jesus arrived in Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish Passover with his disciples. While in the holy city, he preached to hundreds of listeners in the temple and performed miracles. Jesus knew well that these were his last few days left on earth before he would be killed. He had his disciples prepare a feast for them and it was here that Jesus would reveal his plan.

While they were eating, Jesus reveled that he would be betrayed by one of his disciples and handed over to the Romans. Many of the disciples were in bewilderment. They could not understand how such a powerful man like Jesus would allow himself to be killed. Jesus told them that it must happen in order for the prophecies to be fulfilled.

Judas had made a deal with the Chief Priests of Jerusalem. He would hand Jesus over and in return receive thirty pieces of silver. Judas’ hope was that when Jesus saw that death was near, he would show all his true power as God’s son. When Jesus had finished eating with his followers, he went to the outskirts of the city to pray.

He asked God to take away this away from him. Yet, Jesus knew in his heart that he must die in order for his mission on earth to be fulfilled. Judas arrived with a crowd of soldiers. Jesus was arrested and brought in front of the High Priests. They accused him of blasphemy and made false accusations towards him.

With the majority in favor of death. He was taken to Pontius Pilate. Pilate was the Roman governor of Judea. Only he could sentence people to death. He wanted nothing to do with the Jewish matters, just to keep the peace. He conceited to the Jews’ whim. Jesus was given a beaten, whipped, and had a crown of thorns placed on his head.

He was given a wooden cross and had to carry it himself out to a hill outside Jerusalem called “Golgotha.” When he finally made it, he was stripped of his clothes, tied to the crossed, and had spikes placed in his hands and feet. He hung their for hours suffering from lack of oxygen, exhaustion, and loss of blood. He screamed out “Father, why have you forsaken me!” and died.
