Agathodaemon

March 28th, 2009

Agathodaemon, according to ancient Greek religion, was a spirit of the vineyards and grain-fields as well as a personal companion spirit, ensuring good health, luck, and wisdom. This spirit is little noted in Greek mythology, but is prominent in Greek folk religion. To honor him, it was customary to drink and pour out a few drops of unmixed wine in every formal banquet. He was also mentioned in Aristopharies’ Peace. His spouse or companion was said to be Tyche Agathe.

His numinous presence could be represented as a serpent or a young man bearing a cornucopia and a bowl in one hand, with a poppy and ear of corn in the other. It is also said that Agathodaemon could be bound up with the Egyptian bringers of security and fortune.

Afanc

March 28th, 2009

From Welsh mythology, the Afanc is a lake monster, described as a beaver, dwarf-like, or crocodile-like creature, with rare descriptions resembling that of a demon. The lake it dwells in varies. As a matter of fact, Llyn yr Afanc, which is a lake near Betws-y-Coed, was named after this mythical creature. Legend has it that this lake monster would prey or feed on anything that dares to fall into or swim in its lake. Some tales describe the creature as being once chained by villagers while in the lap of a maiden and dragged away to the lake Cwm Ffynnon or being killed by Peredur. Also, many ascribe this creature’s death to King Arthur or to Percival.

Etched deep into the rock close to Llyn Barfog in Snowdonia is a petrosomatoglyph, which is an image of parts of a human or animal body on rock. This was supposedly made by King Arthur’s mount, Llamrai, when it was hauling the Afanc in the lake. This was etched deep in the rock “Cam March Arthur”, or “Stone of Arthur’s Horse”.

Adze

March 28th, 2009

In the tales of the Ewe people of Ghana and Tongo, the adzic is a vampire that takes the form of a firefly and of a human if captured. They are said to possess people, regardless of one’s consent. That person was then labeled a witch, because a witch would make their victim’s poor, from the influence of the adze. Women with brothers, old people, and the poor were accused of being possessed by an adze. The destructive power of the adze was against the family of the witch to whom the witch was jealous of.

The adze is also said to be dangerous without a witch. They would, at night, pass through closed doors and suck the blood from people as they slept. The victims would then become sick and die. They hunt children and feed on palm oil, blood, and coconut water. Many fear this creature, because there is no way to defend against it.

Adhene

March 26th, 2009

The Adhene, also known as the Manx fairies, are said to be fallen angels cast from Heaven, but too good for Hell. They could be benevolent, but are mischievous towards humans, taking babies when they choose, although their powers are said to not be more effective than humans on an errand of mercy. When visible, they are said to be the size of a child, fish at sea, and herd cattle on the hills. They know where to fish apparently when they hear fairies making storage barrels in the caves.

Adaro

March 26th, 2009

In the mythology of the Solomon Islands, the Adaro are malevolent merman-like sea spirits that are said to rise from the wicked part of a person’s spirit. They are described as men with gills behind his ears, a horn like a shark’s dorsal fin, tail fins as feet, and a spear growing out of its head like a swordfish or saw-fish. They live in the sun and travel to and from Earth by sliding among rainbows. They are dangerous to humans and can shoot them with poisonous flying fish. They also are said to be found in waterspouts.
