Battle of the Somme

January 14th, 2009

It has been called one of the worst battles in the history of warfare. It was a turning point in the war to end all wars: World War I. Thousands of British, French, and German troops died in the span of about five months. This battle also saw the introduction of the tank. In essence, this battle was the beginning of modern warfare. The purpose was to break through German defenses, and relieve some of the pressure of the battle-hardened troops at Verdun. The hope was that when the allies attacked, the Germans would have no choice but to move their soldiers to battle the advancing soldiers, thus the men at Verdun would be able to regroup and get mobilize. Yet, by the end of the battle, the casualties here were worse than those at Verdun.
