By 1942, the American forces had begun to turn the war against the Japanese in their favor. With hard-fought battles at Midway and Coral Sea, it was now time to challenge the Imperial Japanese Army on land. The plan was to land United States Marines and Army forces on the large island of Guadalcanal in the south pacific. If the Japanese held on to this island, there would be nothing in their way from invading Australia. This would be the first major land battle of the entire pacific war and would take many months of constant casualties to see who would be the victor.
United States Marines landed on the island and secured the airfield the Japanese were attempting to build. The field was renamed Henderson Field after a soldier lost at the battle of Midway. The major part of the battle was clearing the jungles and caves that covered the majority of the island. Jungle fever, dysentery, and malaria were the main enemy against the advancing soldiers. The Japanese attempted to reinforce the island but to no effect. They also threw much of their forces in a desperate fool-hardy attempt at retaking the airfield. During this event hundreds of crazed Japanese soldiers attempted to overrun American soldiers in their foxholes.
This was known as the Battle of Bloody Ridge. Young marines were forced to fight with anything at hand to hold the Japanese back. After hours of screaming, shooting, and stabbing, the Americans were the victor. Guadalcanal would go down as one of the most infamous battles in the pacific theatre of World War Two.
