Alexander the Great is known as one of the greatest conquerors in the history of the world. He created the largest empire known to mankind. He spread Greek culture and ideas to almost all of the eastern world. Yet, his greatest achievement is that of destroying the Persian Empire. This empire was based mainly in the middle-east which explains why today there is still much animosity between the two peoples. Darius was the king of the Persians and had a hatred for the Greeks.
With the birth of a powerful Greek nation under Alexander the Great, Darius met him in battle on the open desert sands at Gaugamela. Here hundreds of thousands of Persian soldiers would battle only a few thousand Greeks and decide the fate of the empire. It was a deadly battle, yet Alexander’s forces were able to get the advantage since he was an excellent battle strategist. Alexander charged his cavalry right into the center of the Persian lines hoping to kill Darius. This move caused chaos among the Persians and they began to rout. Alexander the Great had finally conquered the largest empire of the time for Greece.
