Britain’s Prime Minister during World War Two was Winston Churchill. He made a statement in which he said “The Battle for France is over, I expect the Battle of Britain is about to begin.” Indeed it was. Hitler’s plan now was to submit the island of Britain to his will. Hitler’s plan was to pound England into submission by constantly bombing airfields and other military facilities. For the entire year of 1940, German bombers and fighter planes flew over the English Channel and began their bombing strategy. The Royal Air Force was always looking towards the sky and were always prepared when German bombers appeared. Hitler soon realized that Britain’s submission was going to be harder than anticipated.

The Germans decided to go for the heart of England and lower the morale of the British citizens. Bombers flew over London and bombed the city almost every night. The Royal family decided to stay in London to help keep the spirit of the country up. Each night, civilians would crowd into subway stations as the bombs fell overhead. London was on fire almost constantly and the firefighters had an extremely hard time putting the fires out. Hitler hoped that after the bombing of London, the British would surrender and he could launch an invasion to conquer the entire island. However, Britain never wavered and fought back relentlessly until finally Hitler decided to end the bombing campaign.
