Automatic Writing: Real or Fake?

Automatic writing is writing of a human being in an altered conscious state believed to be done by dead spirits. The belief is that these dead spirits possess the body and take control of the writing utensil to convey a message. The person usually doesn’t remember what takes place while its happening. Other theories are that mediums think something in their mind, and that is transformed onto the page, or a medium forms material in the subconscious mind from sensory perception.

Mediums have claimed to perform the communication between famous dead spirits throughout history. One of the most famous cases of this was a judge on the New York Supreme Court in the 1850s. This judge’s name was John Worth Edmonds, and when his wife died he become very interested in communication with dead spirits. After working with his medium friend, Edmonds thereafter claimed to have spoken with Francis Bacon and Emauel Swedonborg.

The spirits of dead writers have allegedly composed more works through the form of automatic writing. This included: books, novels, and poetry. Perhaps the most successful example of automatic writing was that of Peral Curran. Pearl became intrigued by communication with dead spirits by automatic writing after hearing about Edmonds, and she got in touch with a spirit named Patience Worth. Over the course of two years, the two would produce hundreds of poems and many novels. Pearl was uneducated and could not have possibly written any of it.

This topic has been under heavy criticism since the creation of its existence. In the 19th century, Psychology Professor Theodore Flournoy theory was that this communication isn’t real, and its just forms of writing in the subconscious mind that we have forgotten from perhaps childhood. Do you think this phenomenon is real or just all a big hoax?

I don’t know for sure whether this is true or not. Especially the fact that most of these occurences took place so long ago. Has there been any recent news on the topic? Is it still reported today?

Unfortunately Dante, there isn’t that much in recent news as far as my research went. However, according to wikipedia there was a 1998 artical in Psychological Science. They conducted an experiment to try to disprove automatic writing by causing doubt in the people’s mind on whether or not automatic writing existed. They thought this would in turn change the outcome of the writing, but it did not, and the performance was the same. According to Psychological Science, automatic writing is real.

Hey guys! I’ve always been interested in the paranormal and I think you’re site is awesome! When i came across this article about automatic writing I was very intrigued. I was somewhat skeptic but wanted to believe what i was reading. But when i saw what Chris wrote as a followup now i totally believe that automatic writing is real. If a psychological science magazine can’t disprove then who can?

Dante that was a smart question. I just wish there were more reports out there in recent years to justify the validity of it. there has to be more than just that magazine.

That is an excellent point Alphonse! I thought of that myself but didn’t think to include that in the article. For those of you who don’t know what spiritual guides are there are defined by wikipedia.org as: According to theosophical doctrine, spirit guides are persons who have lived many former lifetimes, paid their karmic debts, and advanced beyond a need to reincarnate. Each is assigned to watch over an incarnate person, not only on this Earth, but on many other planets throughout the universe. Many psychics believe that spirit guides are chosen on “the other side” by us and God(s) before we incarnate and that they guide us to follow our life’s plan because we want them to.

I did it. 5 years ago I wrote up a book. As for me, it is most fascinating text I ever read. But who is interested in reading it especially after all the criticism it went through?

You all amuse me. I automatic write and I don’t go into some Bizarre trance to do it nor do I speak to “dead spirits” if the spirit is dead then there wouldn’t be nothing to communicate with. The spirits of those who have passed are very much alive and they want to share messages with us. All you have to do is ask.

@Andrew Let me correct my grammar. “there would n’t be anything to communicate with”
