Are Hollywood paranormal movies bad for us?

September 30th, 2009

I am a firm believer that any paranormal movie that Hollywood makes is bad for us. It is not healthy, physically and spiritually, to be watching a movie that has to do with demons and evil spirits. Why don’t they consider making a movie about the good side of the paranormal? Oh, I know why, it won’t get enough money! The worst part about these movies is that a lot of them are true. The commercials are even scary.

I don’t care if you have a strong personality, no one should be watching these types of movies. There is nothing good about them, especially if it’s based on a true story. It’s amazing at how low people will go when it comes to money.

Or the movies could be giving us new mental tools with which we can fight unwanted forms. As a practicing combat magician whose praxis comes from a background in improvisational/chaos/multimodel forms, I have found fictional myth variants immensely useful – from the concept of ‘Tuning’ from Dark City to the ‘words as weapons’ from Dune to the mantra ‘you make it real, you can make it unreal’ from Altered States.

I do agree that supposed ‘true life’ movies are problematic – mostly because they fall into a format of defenceless (usually female) victim gets saved by heroic xtian priest, a format defined by The Exorcist. Also that the ‘true-life’ aspects are usually questionable at best.

And also that since The Exorcist, they invariably suck.

As for movies about the ‘good side’ of the paranormal, may I suggest The Fountain? Deeply spiritual consideration of the mysticism of death. Or (going back a ways) Vibes – which, though a comedy, did its research on Psi phenomena (OOBEs and psychometry) and uses them respectfully.

Another movie that is coming out that offers a clean alternative is ‘’Paranormal.’’ Below is some additional information about this new thriller!!

Paranormal, the latest supernatural thriller from Cross Shadow Productions, (the creators of the Dove.org approved, best-selling BMG releases: Pray and Pray 2: The Woods) will be available in stores nationwide January 26th 2010. The 2009 Mrs. America is starring in it.

Following the success of family-friendly suspense/thriller The Exorcism of Emily Rose (Sony Pictures), comes a riveting supernatural thriller in the vein of the hit SyFy television series, Ghost Hunters and Frank Peretti’s House (Roadside Attractions / Lionsgate).

Paranormal follows best-selling, self-made novelist Greg Evans struggling through the worst case of writer’s block in his award-winning career. In a desperate search for inspiration, Greg quickly finds himself immersed in a world he is not prepared to face. Turning to a group of paranormal investigators, Greg and the ghost hunting team search for proof and answers, yet are unaware they are about to have an experience of a lifetime! None will leave the way they came. Paranormal will peel back the supernatural curtain to reveal how The TRUTH will EXPOSE the darkness!
