Achlis

(An Elk)

Pliny the Elder in the 1st century BC listed Achlis in Roman mythology as a creature looking somewhat like an elk with some strange characteristics. It had a large upper lip and no joints in its back legs, forcing it to sleep sitting up or lean against a tree. This made them an easy catch for hunters. They would chop halfway into the tree where the creature had slept so that when they would lean against it, they would fall to the ground. Due to its back legs, they couldn’t get up fast enough to run away.
