Abraham Lincoln was the sixteenth President of the United States. He is best known for his leadership during the American Civil War. He greatly opposed slavery and is known for issuing the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863 and for being a strong promoter of the thirteenth amendment that abolished slavery which was passed shortly after his death.

Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s theatre on April 14, 1865. Since then, many presidents have reportedly seen and felt Lincoln’s presence in the White House. Presidents Theodore Roosevelt, Herbert Hoover, and Harry Truman have all reported unexplained rappings in their bedrooms and believe that it was Lincoln. Calvin Coolidge’s wife has also reported that on several occasions, she had seen Lincoln’s spirit, looking through a window of the Oval Office with his hands behind his back. One of the maids of the White House also claims to have seen his ghost sitting on a bed taking his shoes off.

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands, while spending a night at the White House, heard a knock on the door of her bedroom. When she had answered it, she saw Lincoln’s ghost staring at her in the hallway. She fainted and when she woke up, the ghost had disappeared. Another visitor who has seen his ghost is Winston Churchill while spending a night at the White House during World War II. After returning from taking a bath, Churchill discovered Lincoln standing by the fireplace in his room. Churchill spoke to Lincoln’s ghost and said, “Good evening, Mr. President. You seem to have me at disadvantage.”, due to the fact that Churchill had been standing naked. Lincoln’s ghost smiled softly and suddenly disappeared.

After the Truman administration, there haven’t been many sightings of Lincoln’s spirit. Some say that the reason for this is due to the remodeling that took place during Truman’s presidency. However, President Ronald Reagan’s daughter, Maureen Reagan, claims to have seen Lincoln’s ghost several times in the Lincoln bedroom.

There are other locations where witnesses claim to have seen his ghost. One location is Ford’s theater, where he had been shot by Booth. Witnesses said that they have seen both the spirits of President Lincoln and Booth in the balcony where his assassination took place. Another location is Lincoln’s burial grounds in Illinois.

It should be known that President Lincoln visions his assassination. He said that he had a dream of seeing a dead body on the floor. When asking the crowd around the corpse who it was, one soldier said “The President is dead.” Regardless, this is a great man in American history so let’s hope that his spirit rests in peace.
