On the morning of September 11, 2001, our world changed forever. Within three hours, almost 3,000 people were dead, and two historical landmarks of New York City had been destroyed. It was the worst attack on American soil since the Pearl Harbor bombing.
Four planes, two from United Airlines and two from American Airlines were hijacked. The hijackers were members of an Islamic fundamentalist group known as Al-Qaeda. Their mission was to attack three targets simultaneously: the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and the Capitol building. However, due to unexpected flight delays, the attacks did not occur at the same time.
After the Pentagon and Twin Towers had been hit, Flight 93 was still on its way to hit Washington D.C. Passengers on the plane were notified by family members that their was an attack. These complete strangers banded together to try to force their way into the cockpit and stop the plane from hitting it’s target.
We may never know if these people truly did breach the cockpit and engage in a struggle with the hijackers. Yet, we can be certain that the plane was forced from not hitting its target by these brave people who fought back against their captors, preventing more deaths of American citizens.
