“Go tell the world, you passerby, That here, by Spartan law, we lie.” These words have echoed throughout history and Hollywood. The saying is that of King Leonidus, the ruler of Sparta who defied the invading Persians. As the legend goes, 300 Spartans turned back hundreds of thousands of Persian soldiers at a mountain pass know as Thermopylae. This story has been open to interpretation by historical scholars for years.

What they have concluded was that most likely the 300 Spartans, along with many other Greek allies, fought around 30,000 Persians. It is unlikely that the Persian army would send hundreds of thousands of soldiers to this small area which was expected to be conquered very quickly. Whatever happened, Leonidas’ story has been an inspiration to soldiers in life or death battles. The quotes and story has been referenced and interpreted by many.

In 2007, Frank Miller’s graphic novel 300 was turned into a feature-film. With the use of digital effects, the film was made to look almost identical to Miller’s novel. The film contained many historical inaccuracies but most audiences seem to have forgiven the film because of all the action. Even though the film was never meant to be interpreted as fact, many still view this film as a historical drama similar to Troy or Alexander.

I can’t watch this movie. I just can’t. Not with the knowledge that the real Spartans were all a bunch of pedophiles.
